Newquay Junior School gets solar panels

Newquay Junior Academy Goes Solar!

As part of their on going commitment to energy saving and conservation, Newquay Junior Academy gets 16kW of Solar PV fitted. The large southeast facing roof area overlooking the field now has 64 high quality Sharp PV panels covering 108m2. Reinforced roof joists were recommended after a structural survey was carried out by Faulkes Jackson Fewings, a structural engineering company based in Launceston who specialise in solar PV weight load calculation. Their recommendation was to double up on all weight bearing rafters where roof hooks were to be fitted.

The Sharp ND-R250A5 solar panels were chosen for their high rigidity and strength, ensuring years of trouble-free electricity delivery. These Sharp solar panels also have a salt mist corrosion coating (BS EN 61701), as Newquay Junior School is close to the sea.

How can we find out how much the roof is producing at any given time and display this for educational purposes to the children? The answer to that is to use a top notch monitoring package. SMA provides the best of German engineering knowhow with super software plus plug and play display.

The SMA three phase inverter delivers a DC current from the roof into the existing school AC electricity supply, reducing consumption from the grid and generating money from government tariffs. Connection to the school Ethernet is via SMA’s Bluetooth Solar Web Box which posts the current electricity production and history onto a monitoring screen using Flashview software for staff and students to see.
